Determining a sustainable scale, in turn, involves other values besides the individual pursuit of maximizing gain or well-being, such as solidarity between and within generations. These values have to be affirmed in the context of scientific controversies and uncertainties in complex cases such as those of global environmental problems. In such cases, the scale deemed sustainable can only be determined through collective decision-making processes, from perspective of application of the Precautionary Principle.
